Why Mulching is One of the Best Investments in Your Garden

In our years of working across Perth gardens, if there’s one single thing we see homeowners consistently skip — despite it being one of the simplest and highest-value improvements you can make — it’s mulching.

A properly applied mulch layer is not just cosmetic. It fundamentally changes how your garden performs, particularly in Perth’s challenging summer climate.

What Mulching Actually Does

1. Conserves Soil Moisture

This is the big one in Perth. Research consistently shows that a 75–100mm layer of quality mulch can reduce soil moisture loss by 50–70% compared to bare soil. In a city where summer temperatures regularly hit 38–42°C, that’s the difference between a garden that copes and a garden that suffers.

Less water loss means less watering — and in a city where water costs are increasing and usage restrictions are routine, that directly saves you money.

2. Suppresses Weeds

Weed seeds need sunlight to germinate. A deep enough mulch layer physically blocks that light from reaching the soil surface, dramatically reducing germination rates. You’ll still get some weeds appearing — wind-blown seeds landing on top of the mulch — but they’re far easier to pull from mulched beds than from compacted bare soil.

Many of our clients report a 70–80% reduction in weeding time after a professional mulch application.

3. Regulates Soil Temperature

Bare soil in a Perth summer can reach surface temperatures of 50°C+ on a hot day. That’s genuinely harmful to plant roots and kills beneficial soil organisms. Mulch acts as an insulating layer, keeping the soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter — a much more stable environment for plant roots.

4. Improves Soil Health Over Time

Organic mulches (hardwood chips, pine bark, sugar cane mulch) gradually break down and become part of the soil, improving its structure, water retention, and biological activity over time. Perth soils are notoriously sandy and nutrient-poor — regular mulching is one of the best long-term strategies for improving soil quality without expensive soil replacement.

Choosing the Right Mulch for Perth

Not all mulches are equal, and the right choice depends on your garden beds.

  • Hardwood chip mulch — Our most commonly recommended option for Perth gardens. Durable, long-lasting (2–3 years before full breakdown), effective weed suppression. Best for established garden beds.
  • Pine bark mulch — Slightly more acidic, which suits azaleas, gardenias, and other acid-loving plants. Good longevity.
  • Sugar cane mulch — Breaks down faster (12–18 months), so adds organic matter to the soil quickly. Good for vegetable gardens but requires more frequent reapplication.
  • Straw mulch — Inexpensive and fast to break down. Best for vegetable gardens and temporary applications.

Avoid using grass clippings as mulch directly on garden beds — they compact, block air and water movement, and can harbour pathogens.

The Critical Detail: Depth

Most DIY mulch applications we see are too shallow. A 25–30mm layer looks okay but provides minimal weed suppression and limited moisture retention. You need 75–100mm to get genuine results.

Also critical: keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks. Mulch directly against stems retains moisture against the bark, which causes fungal diseases and collar rot. Leave a 100–150mm clear zone around the base of every plant.

How Often Should You Remulch?

Organic mulches break down over time — that’s actually part of their value. In Perth, plan to top up mulch every 12–18 months for lighter mulches, or every 2–3 years for hardwood chips.
